BUSINESSES BECOME DEVELOPERS OF EXCLUSIVE NEW UNITS
Local businesses Doyle Security Consultants and Reed Smith Chartered Certified Accountants decided to turn their hand to property developing when they were looking to relocate within the Barnsley area. Both firms have been established in Barnsley for many years with Doyle Security based in the town centre and Reed Smith at Cudworth Business Innovation Centre (BBIC). Both had outgrown their existing premises and were looking for purpose-built units which were near to the motorway.
The two enterprising companies set up a joint venture company called Darling Estates and secured the last plot of land on Dodworth Business Park, close to M1 Junction 37, back in 2003. Work started on the new office development in Summer 2005, once plans for the Dodworth by-pass were approved.
Darling Estates has since constructed eight units of around 2,800 sq ft in size at Great Cliffe Court that have attracted a tremendous amount of interest from local businesses and inward investors. The present occupiers, not surprisingly include Reed Smith and Doyle Security, together with

- UK Consumer Debtline (debt advice and management)
- LGI Enterprises (agency for sports and media personalities)
and , in the next few weeks, the Brook Group and Kinetic HR and Recruitment.
Great Cliffe Court has been a major success, particularly with firms in the professional financial and business services sector and there is now just one unit remaining, available for lease.
Stuart Reed of Reed Smith explains: “We never set out to become property developers but it has been an excellent decision. Although it’s taken a bit longer than we originally planned, we now have eight stunning units constructed in an attractive style that are in keeping with the surroundings. We are delighted with the development, which enjoys a superb location and gives us even better access to our clients across Yorkshire and Derbyshire.”
These high specification premises are being marketed through property consultants Chris Rowlands & Co and relocation advice and support is available through Barnsley Development Agency.
